To ring in the new year, some of SVA's department chairs share their hopes for 2019 and what they plan to devote their time and energy to in the months to come.
Last month's top five most-discussed projects from SVA Portfolios includes a seasonal video magazine, a colorful illustration for Plan Adviser magazine and a sculpture made out of carved wood, wire and tin.
SVA Student Health and Counseling Services presents Mental Health First Aid training for SVA staff and faculty. This eight-hour training teaches the skills to provide initial support when someone experiences a mental health crisis. Find more info about the class here. Register here. MFA Visual Narrative is a low-residency program with two years online and three summers in New York City, teaching a visionary approach to storytelling that equally emphasizes creative writing and visual communication across all media. As part of Lessons from The Intergalactic Design Guide, a series of free online master classes presented by MFA Design for Social Innovation, department chair Cheryl Heller will discuss why everyone needs to be a designer, as well as how to apply social design skills to create change. MFA Design for Social Innovation presents the Inside Scoop, a new webinar series where program faculty and alumni will answer questions about the program. The second webinar in the series will feature faculty member Archie Lee Coates IV and alumnus Josh Treuhaft, who will discuss the yearlong thesis process that students engage with in the program's second year. The On Air Fest residency empowers storytellers and artists to reimagine what an audio artwork can be. Two residents will be selected to create and showcase new work at On Air Fest 2019. Projects across media including poetry, narrative, sculpture, performance, fiction, ambient, interview and documentary are encouraged. Apply here by Thursday, January 17.

Submit to Words 89 by Friday, February 1
Words is a collection of writings by SVA students, faculty and staff and guest writers, and is published twice a year by Humanities and Sciences. The next issue, Words 89, is in need of submissions. To be considered for publication, submit poetry, short stories, short film, theater scripts and/or personal essays as a document attachment (RTF format preferred; no PDFs) to Louis Phillips, editor of Words, at lphillips@sva.edu, with the subject "Submission to Words." Include your name, email address and phone number. Deadline: Friday, February 1.
New year, new semester, news shows! As a special gift from the New Museum, SVA has received four self-guided tours. These tours can accommodate up to 15 students per tour and must be used before October 2019. Please plan to make your reservation at least two weeks in advance. One tour per faculty member.
